The Send a Kid to Theatre Camp 2011 Campaign goal: The Theatre Lab is committed to transforming lives through theatre education. We are the largest and Our Summer Camps for Kids Our Summer Acting Camps for Kids, for children ages 5–13, are taught by the area’s best professional theatre artists and educators. Camp activities are designed to spark children’s imagination, build their self-confidence and stretch their skills—all in a fun and friendly environment. From exploring African and Eastern theatre traditions to diving into Shakespeare and putting it all together in a public performance, it’s an experience that a child will never forget.
Our Scholarship Program is a popular way for our supporters to make a difference in the life of a child. To identify scholarship students for our camp, we work with respected grassroots organizations including CentroNia, Martha’s Table, Sasha Bruce YouthWorks, and school principals from across the DC metro area. In 2011, The Theatre Lab will dispense $63,000 in financial aid to enable disadvantaged children and teens to attend our summer programs (more than one-third total enrollment)—$49,000 of which is Help a kid have an unforgettable summer. The April 21, 2011 performance of The Theatre Lab’s musical Rags will benefit our scholarship programs. Tickets are $50 ($30 of which is tax-deductible). After the show, please join us for a dessert reception with the cast. Rags, by the authors of Fiddler on the Roof and Wicked, is a fascinating musical about U.S. immigration in the early 20th century, partly inspired by the infamous 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that spurred the modern labor movement. Eight young people who participated in our 2010 summer camps are part of the Rags cast!
